Part two of CM Wilson's most influential books 5 - 1

So last week, we started a discussion on my top 10 favorite books of all time and did a detailed run down of 10 - 6. This week we finish up with 5 - 1 and discuss why I love them and what I learned from them.

5. 6 Months to Live by Lurlene McDaniels

So I have read everything Lurlene McDaniels has ever written. Her books are about sick teenagers that don't always make it to the end of the book. They're very gut wrenching, there's tears, sometimes anger, but they're real life. And even though she does have sort of a pattern to the series she writes for her characters, the emotional roller coaster you go on is worth ride. And that's how I want my book to be. Predictability in movies and in books is to be expected. Even if I can figure out who did it or who's going to end up with whom, as long as I enjoy the journey of getting from A to B, I don't mind it.

4. Diary of Ann Frank

Diary of Ann Frank. Do I really need to say anymore than that? This is the book that got me into journaling in the hopes that someday people would be able to find strength in the words that I wrote down in a moment of strife. I know, that's a little ambitious, but a girl can dream can't she? I was impressed with the way she told the story and kept us hooked and she wasn't even trying to. It was just a little girl writing down the events around her as a way to keep sane. That, in and of itself, was brilliant.

3. Finding Fish by Antwon Fisher

Finding Fisher, is one of my favorite movies of all time because it's one of two movies that remind me of me (Good Will Hunting being the other one). So when I found out that it was based on a book, I ran out and got it (I also have his poetry book as well). Finding Fish goes into the details that the movie left out. It talks about just how badly the abuse got and what he had to do to pull himself out of the gutter. And I can appreciate the struggle and someone who had to fight tooth and nail to succeed.

2. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

This book is absolutely breath taking. And it's unlike anything I've read before and in a world of "hey that sounds like" or "that reminds me of" it's exciting to read something you've never read before. This is another one that switches back and forth between points of view and is done brilliantly. It's very dialogue heavy and not so action packed but it doesn't drag and keeps you sucked into the story. Thirteen Reasons Why caused me to look deeper into my stories and not make them so shallow or one dimensional.

1. Sweet Valley High - the entire series

This is the first book series that made me stand up and say "I want to do this". I wanted to create my own world and the characters in it. And I started playing around with ideas and story lines when I was 12 that got more elaborate as I got older. And then, I reached about 25, picked up a Sweet Valley book and realized that things were too perfect and wanted to add a little more drama into my writing.

So there's my list. Feel free to post your favorite books in the comments! Let's talk about it!

FIVE Plus Size Fall Trends To Wear NOW…AND LATER

Fall is just around the corner, and I, for one, am excited!  Fall is my favorite season by far, and with it comes cooling temperatures, falling leaves, and colorful foliage.  Fall is arguably the best season for fashion too, and this season, I’m seeing so many fab new styles cropping up that my wallet is in serious danger!
With fall merchandise already starting to hit stores, it can be too tempting not to start picking up some new pieces for the fall season.  It’s still hot everywhere, but if you’re like me, you can’t wait until it gets cooler to start wearing your new finds.  The trick is to find ways of incorporating your new fall pieces into your current summer wardrobe.

Here are FIVE Plus Size Fall Trends To Wear NOW AND LATER!!!

Sporty

Sporty, athletic-inspired looks are a MAJOR trend this fall, and it’s a perfect trend to give your weekend or other casual looks a bit of a facelift.

Plus Size Fall trends: sporty
Wear Now:
Try a varsity bomber jacket now with a pair of denim shorts, a skater skirt, or over a midi dress.   Pair track pants or joggers with your favorite tank or crop top and a pair of heels for a sexy, but laid-back evening look. Or try a sporty mini dress with sneakers.  Sneakers are having a major moment in fashion.   This is THE season for comfy footwear, so take advantage!!
Wear Later:
Come fall, it will be all about the layering.  Layer that varsity bomber jacket over a pair of denim overalls for casual chic, or work that varsity bomber with a pair of skinny jeans, a body suit, and some sexy heels for a laid-back date night.

(Sporty Items Shown from: Torrid, Addition Elle, and City Chic)

Leather

Real or faux, leather will be everywhere this fall.  While leather is often a staple for cooler weather, you can definitely rock leather in warmer temps too!

Plus size fall trends- leatherWear Now:
Try a floral button down top tucked into a leather skirt, or pair a leather tee with a pair of silky shorts and heels for an easy, breezy look.  A leather vest will provide a stylish extra layer with a mini dress and wedge sneakers without making you sweat.

Wear Later:
When the weather starts to cool, a plus size leather moto jacket layered over EVERYTHING will keep you warm and stylish at the same time.  Throw on an oversized cardigan sweater or blazer over the floral top and leather skirt and pair with tights and ankle booties for a cute daytime look.  That same floral button-down can be paired with leather leggings for the weekend.

(Leather Items Featured: Eloquii, Eloquii, Forever 21, ASOS Curve)

See Through:

Sheer and other see through fabrics are a big trend this fall, and they work for both casual and evening looks. From sporty to evening wear, this accent has taken center stage and I like this.

Plus size fall trends- sheer and laceWear Now:
Try a sheer heel with your favorite summer dress to give your old dress new life.  Pair a mesh sweatshirt with a crop top and denim shorts for casual cuteness, or try a sheer maxi dress or a dress with illusion panels with flats or heels.

Wear Later:
Those sheer heels will look amazing with a velvet suit or sparkly dress for all the upcoming holiday parties (yes, that time of year is coming soon!).  Pair a sheer dress over skinny pants for a straight-from-the-runway look.  For a laid-back look with plenty of style, try that mesh or sheer sweatshirt with a pair of boyfriend jeans, a leather moto jacket, and sneakers or heels.

(Sheer and see through items shown from: Ashley Stewart, Forever 21, City Chic and City Chic)

Florals/Plaid:

In the prints department, expect to see tons of floral prints and plaids.  These classic prints are easy to wear and help add more visual interest to all of your solid basics.
Plus size fall trends- floral and plaidWear Now:
Wear a plaid or floral tee now with a skater skirt, jeans, or shorts and cap the look off with your favorite flat sandals for a no-fuss look.  Try a floral dress with heels for a pretty date look.  A plaid vest can be worn now, paired with a mini-dress or skinny jeans and a tank.

Wear Later:
Add an oversized cardigan and knee-high boots to that floral or plaid dress for the perfect weekend casual look.  Those plaid and floral tees can be paired under suits for work, or with jeans and sweaters.  Mix floral and plaid patterns for a romantic grunge look.

(Floral and Plaid Items from: Ashley Stewart, Pink Clove, Forever 21, and Addition Elle)

Jumpsuits:

Jumpsuits have been popular for the last few seasons, and there doesn’t appear to be any signs that this trend is letting up.  If you haven’t tried a jumpsuit yet, now is the time to give these stylish onesies a try!

Plus size fall trends- Jumpsuits Wear Now:
A jumpsuit can work now for day or night.  Pair a black jumpsuit with a sexy pair of strappy heels for a sleek evening look, or try a printed romper with flat sandals for daytime chic.  A lightweight cardigan can stave off air-condition chill.

Wear Later:
Take that jumpsuit into crisp fall weather by pairing it with a cute cropped jacket.  Pair a bright color with your black jumpsuit for an unexpected fall color palette.  For an on-trend, fall-ready twist, add a cropped jacket with leather details and open-toe booties to a printed jumpsuit.

Hope you enjoyed these ideas on how to wear fall 2014 trends now… and later.

Will you be rocking any of these fall trends?  What fall trends are on your radar?

Working out made easy

We live in a fast paced society. If you have kids or a full time job, going to the gym may not always be an option. And let's face it, the gym can be intimidating if you're just starting out. So I have taken it upon myself to find  some things that you can do at home.

15 Workouts You Can Easily Do At Home

Time to make a change.

2. Lauren Hefez

Lauren’s upbeat videos are filmed in her sitting room — proving that you don’t need space to work out. Try this lower body circuit.

3. Ekhart Yoga

Ekhart Yoga mostly focuses on Hatha yoga and Vinyasa yoga, so it’s holistic, as well as being good for general fitness. Here is a great tutorial for parents. And here is a good one for managing multiple sclerosis-related fatigue.

This channel is really good at posting full workouts, and most of the routines can be accomplished with little to no equipment. This cardio one is good. Or this beginner’s guide to strength training.

9. Fitness Blender

Fitness Blender specializes in at-home videos — some of which are especially useful. For example, this quiet home workout is great if you have small children you don’t want to wake up. The instructors are also very good at answering viewer questions.

These videos aren’t glamourous, but they are 100% achievable in small spaces, like your living room. Try the squats, or grab a partner.

The Top Ten Books That Influenced C.M. Wilson Books 10 - 6

So normally, on Monday's, I spotlight a fellow author and post reviews. But this week, we're going to do things a little different. Over the next two weeks, I'm going to discuss the top ten books that made me who I am. Whether they made me want to write, showed me how to write or simply gave me inspiration by making me look with in myself. Regardless of how they touched me, each of these books changed me in some way and that's what we as writers hope to do.

This week, I will go through books 10 - 6

10. Skinny Women Are Evil by MoNique

A lot of people have given MoNique grief for starting the PHAT girl movement and then losing all of her weight. I'll save that rant for another blog, but know this, the PHAT girl movement was about learning to love yourself no matter what size you are. And that's why I loved this book. At my heaviest, when I felt unlovable, she used humor and her own experiences to show me that if I didn't love myself when I was fat, I would still be hate in a smaller package once I lost the weight.

9. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This was one of the books that was required reading senior year in High School. Most of the other books bored me to tears. I was instantly intrigued by J. Gatsby because I understood him. I understand what it's like to be who everybody else wants you to be and lose yourself in the process. I generally get lost in a book and a plot but don't necessarily get attached to a character. This was the first time that I bonded with a character from a book.

8. A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks

So, I watched the movie a long time before I actually read the book. Then I was staying at my mom's a few years ago and what we had planned got cancelled due to rain. We went to the library to find things to do and I just happened to come across the book. Being that I am a writer, I figured I should compare and contrast the book to the movie. And as much I love the movie, the book is incredible. The book is completely different from the movie, yet it's the same story. The book is set in the 60s and is told in first person from the male character's point of view. The movie is in modern times and shows the aspects of the story that the book limits. And all of this excites the writer in me. It was amazing to see that they were the same thing but completely different. It really pushed me to expand my horizons in my writing and look at things at different angles.

7. Susan's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson

This book had the same effect on me that A Walk to Remember did, although I didn't feel that the t.v. movie did it justice. It starts out as one thing and ends up being about something completely different that you never see coming. The way it switches between point's of view and perspectives intrigues me in the way that it doesn't confuse you and it's easy to stay in the story. It encouraged me to try different things in my writing.

6. Electroboy: A Memoir into Mania by Andy Behrman

I found out this book from Rosie O'Donnel's old talk show. I was really struggling with accepting my own issues and became obsessed with getting it. Once I got it, I spent 3 days doing nothing but reading it. The things that Andy went through trying to get his bipolar disorder under control was amazing. But what was even more impressive was how honest and open he was about his experiences. I didn't feel so alone anymore. I actually reached out to Mr. Behrman and emailed back and forth with him for a while. The conversation I had with him and his book gave me courage to put more of me and my past and my story into my books.

Well, here are my first set of books. Please feel free to comment about what your favorite books are. See you next week with 5 - 1.

Guilty Pleasure Sunday

Okay, admit it. Everyone reading this has those guilty pleasure songs that get cranked when you're on a road trip or sang in the shower. Or guilty pleasure artists. E'erybody hatin' on Jason Derulo these days but I love him. Yes, he pretty much only sings his name, but it's cute the way he does it. My friends want to kill me because I'll randomly walk in the room singing "Jason Derulo", because well, it's funny and I can.

I could very easily do a top 50 guilty pleasure songs list, but I won't bore you with all that. So, I'll do top 5. As always, please feel free to drop me a comment or an email on your favorite songs or comment about mine. Because well, most people do.

5. She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd

There is something cathartic and freeing about screaming "She *bleeping* hates me!!!" at the top of your lungs in a car full of your friends while this song is cranked. Or maybe it's just me. IDK, go try it and then tell me if you don't instantly feel better by the end of the song. Even if you don't, you'll be laughing for the moment and that's all that matters. And it's not about being mad at the opposite sex, just the lyrics and the beat just make you want to crank it and sing.

4. Girl All the Good Guys Want by Bowling For Soup

So maybe, somewhere in the deepest recesses of my mind, I'm absolutely convinced that this song was written about me. I can neither confirm or deny these rumors. I <3 me some Bowling For Soup and this is the song that got it all started for me. The lead singer can't really sing and that's part of the charm of the group, simply because it's a lot of fun to try to imitate his nasally sound.

3. The Night Santa Went Crazy by Weird Al Yankovich

I highly recommend that you stop what you're doing and watch this video. However, children who still believe in Santa Claus should not, under any circumstances, listen to this song or watch the animated video. It will scar them for life. I have watched this video and listened to this song so many times I should totally be desensitized to it but half way through the first verse, I'm laughing so hard I'm crying, every single time I put it on. It's completely demented and twisted and classic Weird Al and I love it. I'm usually not a big fan of his original songs, I'm generally more into his parodies, but he totally knocked it out of the park here.

2. Confessions Part 3 by Weird Al Yankovich

Speaking of Weird Al's parodies, this has to be one of his best. Even better than Fat and Amish Paradise. Now, I love, love L O V E me some Usher Raymond but Confessions  I & II have to be two of the dumbest songs on the planet. So a major amount of kudos go out to Weird Al for calling him to the carpet on this one and continuing the absurdity that is the Confessions saga. It's so silly and nonsensical that it just makes me laugh.

1. Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice

Why are you even rolling your eyes at this one? I am not the only person that has this on their iPod, I'm just the only one that will admit it. There's just something about that opening hook that gets that foot tappin'. And admittedly, it's about the memories that this song conjures up. It's one of those songs that takes you back in time to when it came out and gets your thinking about what was going on back then or maybe it was playing when something significant happened. Fine. Suck your teeth at me and roll your eyes, but don't worry, I won't tell anybody that you watched the video after you read this.

So, talk to me. What are some of your guilty pleasure songs?

Getting to know the books of CM Wilson

I'd like to just take a minute and say how much I love my job. Finally, I'm getting a chance to share what I love to do with the masses, and I can do it from the comfort of my own couch, in my jammies if I so choose. And to be able to work for someone where not only is there not a lot of drama but there's a friendship too.

Is the pace a little more than I expected? Yes. But that was an oversight on my part and it's nothing I can't handle and I'm loving every minute of it.

I thought that it would be a good idea to tell you a little about the books and what they mean to me. I've got 3 out now so as more come out, I'll keep you updated.

Northern Lights: Part 1
 Released: 9/13/14

Ever given birth to an 800 pound baby? That's pretty much how I feel about my first book. It's been 19 years in the making and hit's aas gone through several reincarnations of characters and plots before finally becoming what it is today.

The simplest way of explaining Northern Lights is, that Carrington and Eli are wrapped up in their own worlds and think that they have the other one figured out. They're both guilty of stereotyping, until they realize that they are completely wrong about each other. Through a series of mishaps and being thrown together, they realize that they have more in common than they thought that they did. And that's just the jump off point. There's a little bit of everything in Northern Lights, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Glow Stick: High School is not for the Faint of Heart
Release Date: 10/4/14 preordering available now

I am both excited and terrified for Glow Stick to come out.  Although I sprinkle a little bit of me in each book I write, Glow Stick, has me on just about every page. I call it my 8 Mile because it's a fictional retelling of my experiences of being bullied in High School. The names and people have been changed but the events are completely real. I am so very proud of this book. And I cannot wait to see how it's received. It's very raw and real and honest. It's all me.

17 year old Camille is very comfortable in her skin. Even though she's overweight, she knows who she is and she's happy. The teasing she endures at school is annoying at best until it gets a little more harsh than normal and then she starts wondering if maybe they have a point. She's tested and pushed to her breaking point.

Water Queen: Elements of Desire Book One by JP Simmons
Release Date: 10/10/14 preordering available now

This series so freaking hot I can't wait to read it. Just seeing the cover makes me want to pick it up. The first collaborative effort between myself and the CEO of BraveGirl Publishing, Julia Press Simmons, we put our hats in the fantasy/paranormal romance arena. Our two completely different writing styles blend together beautifully and make for prose that pop right off the page. It's been an absolute joy working with JP and it's fun to turn on that Google Doc and see what we can concoct together.

Since the beginning of time, darkness has fed off of the light, the Eternal Flow. When darkness threatened to extinguish light for good, light fought back. It collapsed in on itself, exploding into the known universe. Phylon, the Sphere of Desire, was one of the first worlds to form, and the Eternal Flow, in an effort to protect itself from the darkness, cultivated the Elementals, Guardians of the Flow, Keepers of the Balance.

These are the stories of the Elemental Queens, Aquatica, Blaze, Tempest, and Terra. They fought with all of their will and all of their strength, but they could not defeat the Arcebus, spawn of the darkness. They saved all they could and fled to Earth.

Now the Elementals who survived are struggling to adapt on a foreign planet, and one queen's love for a human threatens to destroy the balance.

I hope that you enjoy reading the books as much as I loved writing them. And trust me, there's more to come.

Have a great Saturday!
